Extracting DNA from Bananas: A Homeschool Science Adventure
When you think of DNA, you might picture a high-tech laboratory full of microscopes, white coats, and advanced machines. But what if I told you that you can extract DNA right in your kitchen using a banana, a few everyday ingredients, and a sprinkle of Armitage House magic?
Not only is this experiment simple enough for families… it is unforgettable.
DNA becomes something children can see, touch, and explore.
Let’s begin the adventure.

What Is DNA?
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the instruction manual for life. Every living organism has DNA tucked inside its cells. It tells the organism how to grow, behave, repair itself, and function.
We normally cannot see DNA because it is microscopic. But when we break open cells and separate the DNA from everything else, the strands clump together. That is when it becomes visible.
And that is the magic of this experiment.

Why Bananas?
Bananas are some of the easiest fruits for extracting DNA because:
- They have three sets of chromosomes
Their cells are soft and mash easily
They produce large amounts of visible DNA
They are inexpensive, safe, and fun to work with
Kids can extract a surprising amount of DNA from a single banana, which is why this is one of the most popular beginner science experiments.

Materials You’ll Need
• Half of a ripe banana
• Resealable plastic bag
• One teaspoon dish soap
• Twoteaspoons salt
• Half cup water
• Fine strainer, coffee filter, or cheesecloth
• Clear glass or cup
• Rubbing alcohol (cold from the freezer for at least 1 hour)
• Small bowl and spoon
• Measuring spoons
• Optional: goggles, apron, notebook
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Make Your DNA Extraction Liquid
In a small bowl, gently mix:
• Half cup water
• One teaspoon dish soap
• Two teaspoons salt
Dish soap breaks open the cell membranes.
Salt helps the DNA stick together more easily.
2. Prep the Banana
Place half a banana inside a resealable bag.
Mash for two minutes until smooth and creamy.
3. Add the Extraction Liquid
Pour your extraction mixture into the bag.
Mash gently for one additional minute.
4. Filter the Banana Mixture
Place a filter or strainer over a clear glass.
Slowly pour the banana mixture through.
Let it drip until most of the liquid has passed through.
The filtered liquid contains DNA along with other cell components.
5. Add the Cold Alcohol
Now the magic begins.
Slowly pour your cold, alcohol down the side of the glass.
Do not stir. Let it form a separate layer on top.
In just a moment, white cloudy strands will begin rising into the top layer.
That is the banana DNA.
This moment always feels like discovering treasure.
6. Observe and Explore
Use a skewer, toothpick, or pipette to spool the DNA.
Children love seeing that something once invisible is now right in front of them.

The Science Behind the Magic
• Soap dissolves the membranes of banana cells
• Salt helps DNA molecules clump together
• Filtering separates solid chunks from the liquid
• Cold alcohol pulls the DNA out of solution
Learning Extensions and Variations
1. Compare Fruits
Extract DNA from bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and kiwis.
Which one produces more?
Create a chart.
2. DNA Storytelling
Invite your child to write from the perspective of a banana cell.
“I have lived inside this banana since it was green…”
3. Build a DNA Model
Use pipe cleaners, candy, LEGOs, or beads.
4. Draw and Label
Sketch the glowing DNA and label each part of the experiment.
Why This Experiment Matters in Homeschooling
Children learn best through hands-on exploration.
They learn through curiosity, not memorization.
This experiment gives children direct access to the building blocks of life.
By letting them extract DNA, you help them:
• build confidence
• fall in love with science
• develop analytical and observational skills
• understand an invisible concept through play
• connect creativity, art, biology, and wonder
This is what learning should feel like.
